To use NRIN which Browser do I need? [ Top ]

NRIN supports and requires the following:

  • JavaScript - Enabled
  • Cookies - Enabled
  • MapGuide Viewer

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer

  • Minimum Version: 4.x (for browsing/searching) or 5.x (for Contributing)

    OR

You can download and install the latest versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator from their websites. Click on the links below.

What are Cookies and why does my Browser require them? [ Top ]

A Cookie is a small file copied to your hard disk, which helps a web site identify you the next time you visit. Cookies are not able to read your hard drive and they cannot access files and information stored in your computer.

If you are concerned about enabling (accepting) Cookies, your browser can be set to warn you that you are about to receive one. You would then have the option of accepting Cookies or not, on an individual basis.

If your browser settings do not enable/accept Cookies, NRIN will not function properly.

Note: If nothing happens after clicking the Test Cookie button, it means your computer is NOT able to accept Cookies.

Why does my Browser require JavaScript to be enabled? [ Top ]

JavaScript provides the interactive functionality for the NRIN Web Site. If your browser settings do not enable JavaScript, NRIN will not function properly.

NRIN requires your browser to have Cookies and JavaScript enabled (accepted).

To change your browser settings to enable/accept JavaScript and Cookies, determine which browser you are using, then find the specific instructions for each browser version, by using the browsers Help Menu / Search Index.

  • For a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, you will need to change the settings in Internet Options.

  • For a Netscape Navigator browser, you will need to edit the settings in Preferences.

What is MapGuide Viewer and how do I know if I have it? [ Top ]

What does Data Entry Time Out mean? [ Top ]

During routine maintenance of the NRIN Server, data entry will be suspended for a period of time. This means additions or modifications to your contribution will not be possible, until after the maintenance is completed.

However, you will be able to conduct searches and browse the NRIN site, as it is only the data entry that will be unavailable. Once the maintenance is completed, you will be able to make your contribution.

What does Data Entry Off Line mean? [ Top ]

When the NRIN site detects that you are logged in but have not performed any actions (data entry) for a period of time or have been searching and then idle for a period of time, NRIN will ‘Time Out’ your session.

  • If the Time Out Error occurred while your computer was idle during data entry (during your contribution), you will need to Log On again and restart your contribution.
  • If the Time Out Error occurred while your computer was idle during browsing and searching NRIN, two options will be presented: Back to Search Form or Perform a New Search. Both options will allow you to resubmit your search.

What are the search operators I can use? [ Top ]

This is the method for directly passing full-text search expressions for searching. The following operators are supported:
& Treated as the AND operator.
and Treated as the AND operator, unless contained within single quotes, in which case it is treated as a search word. "and" is case insensitive.
| Treated as the OR operator.
or Treated as the OR operator, unless contained within single quotes, in which case it is treated as a search word. "or" is case insensitive.
~ Treated as the NOT operator.
not Treated as the NOT operator, unless contained within single quotes, in which case it is treated as a search word. "not" is case insensitive.
"" A single word can be wrapped in double quotes. A set of words wrapped in double quotes will be treated as a phrase (e.g. "this old house").
* center truncation, e.g. "any*" would match "any", "anything", "anyxyz", etc.
() Used to specify precedence, or just for clarity.

A list of words in the search expression will be treated as a word list (the Word List Relationship value in the server configuration file determines whether these words are 'AND'ed or 'OR'ed).
